Pot laws are failed policy
Letter to the Editor 11:03 p.m. CDT September 1, 2014
The views of the Press-Citizen editorial board mimics those of the majority of Americans nationwide who seek to replace the failed policy of cannabis criminalization with legalization and common sense regulation (“Overhaul Iowa’s marijuana laws,” Aug. 22).
It makes no sense from a public health perspective, a fiscal perspective or a moral perspective to perpetuate the prosecution and stigmatization of those adults who choose to responsibly consume a substance that is objectively safer than alcohol or tobacco.
To continue to criminalize the marijuana plant and to arrest and prosecute those adults who consume it responsibly is a disproportionate public policy response to what is, at worst, a public health concern, but not a criminal justice issue.
